Get Your Own Image Hosting Web Site

Post by Phryne » Tue Jul 04, 2017 12:43 pm

Since 2003, the popular photo hosting service Photobucket has been letting users upload and host images for free on their servers. They have over 10 billion images stored by 100 million registered users. But now they’re going to start charging, and that means billions of images around the Web are now broken.

Photobucket Account UpgradeHotlinking (AKA inline linking) is when someone takes an image file hosted on a server and embeds it on a different webpage elsewhere. Since the new webpage continuously requests the file from the original source server, it saps the server owner’s bandwidth (and storage space).

Photobucket allowed hotlinking photos uploaded to and stored on its servers for a long time. This was their business model, and they made money from ads on their own site, which users would be exposed to when they went to upload content.

Unfortunately for Photobucket users the service is rolling out a $399 per year subscription fee for those who want to hotlink images from Photobucket’s servers to display elsewhere. That means that billions of images across the Web now display an error message instead of the image in question.

Bought it, paid for it, using it . . .

BUT how do you post images into the post?

IMG and LINK buttons in the create post screen give you . . .

Image

Unlike Photobucket, there does not seem to be a direct link for Forums ? :(

It's not immediately apparent how you do that but:
  • click on Albums in the menu
  • Next click the album that contains the image you want to link to
  • Then click the image again to give you the full size view
  • Now right click on the image and choose to 'copy image address' or similar, I'm using Safari on the Mac but on a pc I think it's 'copy link location'
  • Next go to the forum and start a new thread or edit one already there and paste the link
  • Then you need to enclose it in the BB image tags so it would look like this for example. Obviously your link would be different but this shows the image tags at each end

Code: Select all

[img]http://thegraphicscompany.uk/koken/storage/cache/images/000/001/Pacifica-112VMX,medium_large.1499116996.png[/img]
That will then display properly in the forum.

Sounds more convoluted than it is but it's quick and easy once you get the hang of it.

By the way there is an img tag creator in the forum. 9th along from the left in the menu just above the text message box. So you can paste your link. Highlight the whole link and then click on the 'insert image' button.

As you can see Jeff, I edited your first link and that now works :)

Nope, not working, I did this

[ i m g]http://ezpz.biz/albums/screenshots/cont ... /lightbox/[/img]

I misspelt img on purpose to force the code to be visible

http://ezpz.biz/albums/screenshots/cont ... /lightbox/

On an ipad, open image, long press, copy link url.

???????

By the way there is an img tag creator in the forum. 9th along from the left in the menu just above the text message box. So you can paste your link. Highlight the whole link and then click on the 'insert image' button.

???????

That's what I used.

Yeah but your not copying the the full image link. What your pasting is the shortcut to the image and that will not display it anywhere but your gallery.

It should be,

Code: Select all

[img]http://ezpz.biz/storage/cache/images/000/137/Screen-Shot-2017-06-30-at-215524,medium_large.1499182884.png[/img]
Which produces :

Go to you gallery, click on an image so it opens in your Lightbox and then right click it and choose to copy image address then past that into the forum.

If it doesn't look like the link in the code above i.e with a .png on the end then it's not the full link but a short cut.

As I mentioned earlier I used iPad, opened in Lightbox, press and hold, copy url link and you get this

http://ezpz.biz/albums/screenshots/cont ... /lightbox/

Not this

http://ezpz.biz/storage/cache/images/00 ... 182899.png

So, an issue with Apple or the program not copying the whole link?

That last post was all done on the iPad. Went to your site, clicked through to the album and then the photo so it opened in the Lightbox. Pressed on the image to get the copy dialogue up, chose 'copy' came here to the forum and pasted the link and then enclosed with the image tags. Had to manually do the tags though because selecting the whole link on the iPad blocked out the menu bar along the top of the message box.

Must say that even though your having some teething problems linking images your site is looking very nice :)

Well, my iPad doesn't give you an option to copy the image, only Copy Link URL, which is the shortened (non working) link!

I will post some screenshots later, but for reference I am on 10.3.2

Weird. Only way I can get a link is to open it in a new window and copy and paste the whole link from the browser window, very inconvenient.

Ahhhhh. I use Chrome, in Safari I get different options for copying!

Damn, I hate Safari.

Did a test and it still posts the wrong (short) link - going to the pub!

Will retry tomorrow
