cll.press adware on Chrome

Post by jaisonpandey » Tue Oct 30, 2018 7:59 am

Running (to my knowledge) the latest versions of Windows 10 and Google Chrome.

I'm so frustrated. I've tried everything and can't get rid of this f'n virus.

I downloaded some shady shit and one thing led to another and now there'a virus injected into my Google Chrome.

Here is what one of the popups look like.Rightmove Kijiji Quizlet

They advertise a variety of things. Some of the ones that are fresh in my memory are "update windows", "your download is ready", and of course "hot women in your area" (and others of that sort).

All of them have that little "Google Chrome - cll.press" at the bottom. I have no idea what the significance of cll.press is, and Google didn't help me too much with that other than that it's adware (no shit).

They don't seem to come in any set pattern. Maybe every 20-30 minutes and only when Chrome is running (foreground OR background).

About half of the time they come in sets of 10-20, and they pop up on top of ANYTHING. I've been trying to play games in fullscreen and they pop up over top of it. As if having to tab out to click close on them wasn't annoying enough, sometimes there are too many to close until they all disappear (on some kind of timer).

Clicking on one of them just brings me to your generic scam/advertisement website. They didn't have anything that looked like they were obviously related.

I clicked on a couple but didn't record much from that because it just felt really generic. I'll try to remember to click on a couple eventually.

I've run every antivirus in the pinned post, none of them removed the virus. I spent a good hour or so manually scanning through a good portion of files that I thought might be relevant, but I wasn't able to track down the malicious ones.

I tried reinstalling chrome. I left the sync on because I didn't want to loose all of my bookmarks and extensions and stuff. Doing a fresh reinstall pretty much feels like a last resort to me, right before wiping my PC.
